A recent study proves that the human papilloma virus vaccine (HPV vaccine) is hugely beneficial in prevention of pre cancerous cervical lesions. It is named as HPV16/18 AS04 ajuvanted vaccine. It also prevents other cancer triggering HPV types, which are related to HPV16/18. The most notable among these are HPV31 and HPV45.
The study about HPV31 and HPV45 was conducted among the women between 15 to 25 years of age. Those women received 3 doses of vaccine over a period of six months. The study revealed that the vaccine was 98% effective for dealing with HPV16/18, and 37% to 54% effective in preventing twelve other cancer triggering HPV types.
It is a known fact that HPV16/18 is the root of almost 70% cases of cervical cancer, while other cancer triggering HPV types are the reasons behind the remaining 30 percent cases. On an average, if you take this vaccine, you will surely be 11 to 16% protected from the attack of cervical cancer.
HPV vaccination is known for reducing the incidents of cervical cancer significantly. Practices of cervical excision and colposcopy have also decreased favorably. Current HPV vaccination plans are targeting only young women and girls. These women should be between the age 11 and 26 years. The vaccination should be done before they have their first sexual intercourse. However, boys and men must not be overlooked, as they also need to be safe from HPV to stop the virus from spreading.
