Troubles With Generics

Today, there are many more prescriptions that are available in generic form.  Sometimes the pharmacist will talk to you about generics but before you make the switch, ask your doctor. There have been various complications reported by those who changed from the name brand drug to the generic form.

Antidepressants are one such drug that has had concerns according to Psychiatrist Nada Stotland of Chicago. She reported that two of her patients who changed their prescription from Zoloft to its generic form, both plunged into depression.  These patients returned to Zoloft and immediately were back to their normal self.  There have also been patients with hypertension who reported a rapid heart beat and other reactions when they went from Toprol XL to its generic.

There was then a recall of six million bottles of the generic version of Toprol XL after the FDA did their inspection. Some people taking Zolpidem, which is the generic version of Ambien, reported it to be not as effective in helping with their insomnia. Synthroid is a drug that is taken for thyroid dysfunction with the generic version called Levothyroxine. Some patients found their condition got worse and it was also blamed for heart disease and perterm labor.
