Type1 Diabetes and Drugs

diabetes01Type 1 diabetes is the less common form of the disease. It occurs when the body fails to produce the required quantity of insulin. This disorder is generally diagnosed in the earlier part of one’s life. One of the most common side effects of this disease is kidney disorder.

Till recent times, the two prescription drugs enalapril and losartan were known to be the best ways of dealing with any kidney trouble caused by type1 diabetes. But, the recent reports have proved otherwise. However, the drugs are still used in the later stages of the disease when it is well established. The drug is also helpful in treating eye trouble caused by diabetes.

A research was conducted for a period of five years. There were three different groups involved in the process. The three groups were assigned to take placebo, which is an inactive substance, or enalapril or losartan as each drug acts in a different way to counter the effects of angiotensin.

When the research was conducted, the results were disappointing from the kidney perspective; however, the results from the eyes perspective were pleasantly surprising. 65% of the participants experienced a decrease in their eye damage with use of enalapril and 70% among by using losartan.
